Aiming Higher

 

Lincolnshire Dance has successfully established seven dance groups for young people with disabilities across the county, as part of Lincolnshire County Council’s Aiming Higher programme.

Who:
The groups are aimed at children and young people aged 11-24 yrs with multiple and profound health needs including:

•  those with disability and life limiting conditions
•  those who require palliative care
•  those with cognitive and sensory impairments
•  those who have moving/handling needs and/or require special equipment

What:
Participants will attend weekly dance sessions led by professional dancers and assisted by a team of support care workers.  Practical sessions will run for 1 ½ hours with 15 minutes either side to arrive/prepare for the session and depart.  Lincolnshire Dance aims to support young people become active learners working towards developing skills that can be applied to everyday life including building relationships with others and self esteem as well as increased levels of kinaesthetic sense, fine and gross motor control and problem solving.

Where:
We have groups in Lincoln, Boston, East Lindsey (Horncastle), West Lindsey (Gainsborough), NK (Scredington), SK (Bourne) and South Holland (Spalding).

When:
The South Holland group will be based at The South Holland Centre and will run every Monday evening from 4.45pm – 6.15pm starting on Monday 13 September 2010.  The group will run during term time and costs just £2 per session.
 
Parents and carers are welcome should the participants wish, however this programme is intended as respite care. This ensures that we are supporting the needs of parents/carers, as well providing opportunities for the young people to develop independence and confidence.
